BGP Hosts in Europe

I spent yesterday having a quick look at which European (using RIPE's definition of Europe) hosting companies can provide a dedicated server with a BGP feed.

A quick search turned up the very useful site bgp.services which lists 101 hosting providers in Europe that will apparently provide a BGP feed without requiring you to install your own equipment.

I started looking at these randomly when one of the sites decided to throw a Cloudflare CAPTCHA at me, because apparently reading a website should be some sort of puzzle.

It's pretty shocking that any company that claims to provide hosting would hide behind Cloudflare, especially as the company in question claimed to sell DDOS protection. This kind of centralized protection racket is destroying the Internet, and undermining our human rights to security and privacy. Giving a US-based company the ability to intercept and decrypt your banking, private chats etc. is not so much a slippery slope as a sheer cliff.

So, I decided to take the list of 101 providers and whittle them down systematically using the following basic criteria for competence:

  • - MUST have IPv6 on their website and MXs
  • - MUST NOT not use Cloudflare (or equivalent)
  • - MUST be running their own MXs (no Gmail, no Office365)

I excluded a few others along the way because their website was down, had a certificate error, or their site just displayed a loading spinner at me for 30 seconds. Anyone just reselling Hetzner or OVH was also excluded.

All I'm asking here is that any company providing hosting services uses the current standard Internet Protocol (IPv6), and that they host their own website and email. They're selling hosting services. That's really the basics.

Anyone providing network services on IPv4 and not IPv6 in 2024 is bad at their job. If that's you, don't be offended - go learn how to do your job properly and stop holding society back. You are not too old to learn. The best time to learn IPv6 was 20 years ago, but the next best time is now :-)

That simple criteria cut the list down to just 13 providers:

Active Servers

Location: Frankfurt, Germany

Website: active-servers.com

Their website is a bit annoying to navigate. No mention of BGP on their site that I can see, so would need to contact them. Appear to have some reasonably priced servers.

AlexHost

Location: Chisinau, Moldova

Website: alexhost.com

"Situated 5 meters underground in a protected bomb shelter of a former military factory". If your threat model includes missile attack then I suppose this is where you go. They claim they will ignore US DCMA takedown requests. No mention of BGP that I could see.

Alwyzon

Location: Vienna, Austria (InterXion)

Website: alwyzon.com

No mention of BGP.BGP available. A monthly fee of 16 € and a one-time setup fee of 50 € applies (excl. VAT). Some reasonably priced servers.

ARP Networks

Location: Frankfurt, Germany (HQ in USA)

Website: arpnetworks.com

Finally, one that actually says it does provide a BGP session ($10 USD/month). Good selection of O/S, including FreeBSD and OpenBSD. All pricing in USD.

ASDASD

Location: Venice, Italy

Website: asdasd.it

Looks like you need to contact them to find any pricing or information. Contact methods are phone, Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+ but not, apparently, email.

DutchIS

Netherlands

Website: dutchis.net

Virtual servers only afaict. Broken TLS certificate on their docs page. Ooops! If I'd noticed that earlier they wouldn't have made the list. Looks like you can get a BGP interconnect with Speed-IX. The ordering page appears to be broken.

Edgoo

Portugal

Website: Edgoo

No ordering page or pricing. Just a pretty picture that won't sit still.

FiberSix

Salerno, Italy

Website: fibersix.it

Dedicated server for €125/month with BGP session included.

JustHost

Location: Russia

Website: justhost.ru

No mention of BGP.

Karabro

Location: Lund, Sweden

Website: karabro.se

They sell transit, so they must offer BGP, but their site is rather light on details. Need to contact them, and fill in a CAPTCHA to do so. They want you to prove you are worthy.

Mythic Beasts

Location: Cambridge, UK

Website: mythic-beasts.com

I have heard this company recommended so many times I've lost count (including earlier today), and by people who know what they're talking about. Rumour has it this is where many of the Bytemark and Memset refugees ended up after IOMart destroyed the UK independent hosting market. Explicitly mention BGP on their site, and give full details of BGP Communities etc. Other hosting companies take note: this is what a hosting website should look like. Perhaps a bit expensive compared to others on this list, but quite probably worth it.

URDN

Location: Kyiv, Ukraine

Website: urdn.com.ua

$180 USD for a dedicated server with BGP feed. Hard to argue with their FAQ, really.

vserver.site

Location: Frankfurt, Germany

Website: vserver.site

A very annoying website that pops up a spinner every time you click on anything. A BGP feed is 5 EUR/month with a dedicated server

Conclusion

So, of the 13 that made the list, only 5 6 actually clearly state that they offer a BGP feed on their site. If you know any competent hosting providers that provide a BGP feed please let me know. Drop me an email, or ping me on Mastodon. I was looking at Europe specifically, but I'm interested in others worldwide for other projects.
